The driver, for instance, releases the clutch to disengage the input shaft when selecting first gear. The shift lever is used by the driver to select first gear. The shift fork is then moved by the linkage to connect the first-to-second locking collar to the output shaft and lock it in place with first gear. Because the locking collar has secured the first gear to the output shaft, the output shaft turns when the clutch is released, engaging the input shaft.
To select second gear, all the driver had to do was repeat the process while moving the shift lever into second gear as the driver increased speed. The shift shaft propels the shift fork into second gear and out of first gear. When you release the clutch, the input shaft is engaged once more, sending power this time through the second gear. You need a locking collar, shift fork, and second shift linkage to shift into third gear.
This one is between the third and fourth gears. When shifting from first gear to second gear, the countershaft and output shaft move at different speeds. It would be like turning the shaft at two different speeds to shift into a higher gear when the vehicle is moving at a slower speed. Between the torque converter and the planetary gearset, the gear pump pulls and presses transmission fluid from a sump.
